Topic: Oxygen

An ELEMENT, normally a GAS, that makes up about one-fifth of the atmosphere of the earth. Oxygen is usually found as a MOLECULE made up of two ATOMS. Its symbol is O. When we breathe in oxygen, our blood carries it throughout the body, where it is used to generate energy.

Element: A simple substance that consists of atoms of only one type. Both hydrogen and oxygen are elements, but water, which is formed when they combine, is not an element.

Gas: A substance like air that can not normally be seen. The home was heated with natural gas. Atmosphere: The mixture of gases that surround the earth.

Molecule: The smallest unit into which any substance can be divided without losing its own chemical nature. An oxygen molecule.

Atoms: The smallest piece of a simple substance that can exist alone.

Topic: Pollyanna

A children’s book from the early twentieth century by the American author Eleanor H. Porter. The title CHARATER is an orphan girl who, despite the difficulties of her life, is always extremely CHEERFUL. A person who is referred to as a “Pollyanna” remain excessively sweet-tempered and OPTIMISTIC even in ADVERSITY.

Character: A person in a book or play. It is a good play, but I did not like the robber’s character.

Cheerful: Happy and lively. She was cheerful at her birthday party.

Optimistic: What ever happens will be good. I am optimistic at your chances of learning English.

Adversity: Bad fortune or trouble. A good friend will not leave you during times of adversity.

Topic: Creation God’s creation of the world as described in the Book of GENESIS, begins like this: “In the beginning God CREATED the heavens and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the surface of the waters. And God said, ‘Let there be light’: and there was light.” According to this first account, the Creation took six days, with God creating Adam and Even on the sixth day, and resting on the seventh day. Genesis also gives a more detailed account of the Creation, in which God makes Adam out of CLAY, prepares the Garden of Eden for him, and then fashions Eve out of Adam’s RIB.

Genesis: Beginning or Origin. The book of Genesis explains the origins of the universe.

Created: To cause something new to exist. God created the earth.

Clay: Heavy firm earth that is soft when wet but hard when baked under heat. The cooking pot was made of clay. The house’s bricks are made of clay.

Rib: The bones going around the chest of a person or animal. We are having roast ribs of beef for dinner.
